Urban Timber North West
Providing rough sawn and kiln dried timber to Traders and Consumers across the North West of England. Sourced from urban trees that would otherwise be disposed of as logs or biomass.
What We do
About Us
Our tree contracting business, FTS Trees, has been going for over forty years. Right from the start we felt we should be maximising the possible uses of timber arising from the pruning and felling of urban trees.
Our vision has been to make this raw material accessible in different forms to those who recognise its value.
The wood we come across can be multifunctional and often possess unique beauty. When our tree contracting business takes down trees we make an effort to keep usable sections intact. They are then taken to our yard, milled into boards, air dried, kiln dried and if required, machined into boards or made into an assortment of items.
We have used this timber for many projects over the years and hope to reach out to more people to encourage the use of this urban timber resource.

Making the Most of Your Timber
In situations where a tree does need to come down, we do our best to make something positive out of it. Depending on the type of timber, we can turn it into useful and/or artistic items, giving your tree a new lease of life! Examples of this process can be seen throughout our website.

Can I Buy Your Timber?
Our Timber Services
Our Timber stores are ever evolving. Our Gallery is bursting with everything from rough sawn planks with dozens of varieties and sizes, to finished chopping boards and various other pieces.
We are in the process of building a small warehouse to increase our volume of kiln dried timber.
We currently sell timber in person at our site in Ashley, but we are looking to see if we can partner with outlets that share our ethics.
If you are looking for unique, local timber either as a one off project such as a mantle piece or bookshelf, or you work with wood and are looking for a regular supply, please get in touch to discuss how we can help!
See our online shop for an idea of the type of products we sell.
Sustainability and Traceability
What Is Urban Timber
Almost all commercial timber bought in the UK is either imported or comes from foresters or woodlands where timber is grown and felled specifically for commercial use.
We believe our approach is rare but growing practice in the UK. Unlike most suppliers, the timber that we sell is from urban environments across the North West of England. We never grow or fell trees for their timber. They have been felled, processed and sold entirely locally within the North West of England.
Urban timber is from trees that grow in gardens, streets and parks. It is very varied in species, size, form and condition. As such it is very challenging to process. Urban tree contractors, more frequently known as Tree Surgeons, usually cut trees into small sections to be used as firewood or in bulk as biomass for commercial power stations.
We are one of few contractors who believe that the value of this timber should be maximised by processing it into higher end products.
